Abba Kyari, the suspended Deputy Commissioner of Police, has been released from the Kuje Custodial Centre in Abuja after spending 27 months in detention. His release follows the fulfillment of bail conditions set by the Federal High Court in Abuja.
Adamu Duza, spokesperson for the Nigerian Correctional Service in the Federal Capital Territory, confirmed Kyari's release to *PUNCH* on Friday. "DCP Kyari has perfected his bail conditions and has since been released today," Duza stated.
Last week, *SaharaReporters* disclosed that the Federal High Court had granted Kyari a two-week temporary bail to attend his mother’s burial. The court's decision allowed Kyari to pay his final respects to his mother, Yachilla Kyari, who passed away on May 5, 2024. Yachilla Kyari was survived by 10 children, including Abba Kyari, her eldest son.
The court indicated that the two-week period would suffice for Kyari to return to his home state of Borno and complete the burial rites. The court has scheduled May 31 for the hearing of his bail application in the ongoing trial related to drug charges filed by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).
Kyari, along with four members of the Intelligence Response Team (IRT), faces charges of conspiracy to deal in 17.55kg of cocaine and tampering with 21.35kg of cocaine seized from convicted drug dealers. The charges stem from an NDLEA investigation revealing that Kyari and his deputy, ACP Sunday Ubua, allegedly received a combined N4.2 billion in their bank accounts, with at least N1.4 billion passing through Kyari's account during his tenure as commander of the IRT.
The NDLEA's findings were detailed in a report submitted to the former Attorney-General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami (SAN), in 2022.
