In Utako, call girls have ‘1001 survival tricks’

The area known as Utako district in Abuja may not be very popular outside the Federal Capital Territory. However, the area has become the place to go to for many sex workers who besiege the area to escape the prying eyes of the authorities who say the activities of the call girls constitute nuisance to the capital city.
At night, when so many people would have returned to their abodes, call girls, dressed in very skimpy wears, take over this serene area of the city which they have since turned into a red light district. Activities here peak at the weekend or on public holidays when so many people are not thinking of going to work the following morning.
The Eden Park and Garden situated in the area draws more night prowlers due to its expansive premises.
Emeka Zeb, a fun seeker, who opened up to Weekly Trust as to the nature of activities taking place in the area, said “people come here to catch fun, from having drinks with friends to picking girls. However, you also have cases of criminal elements coming here to perpetrate their criminal activities, or the security operatives coming here to enforce the ban on prostitution in Abuja.”
Zeb, who also confirmed that he is involved in almost all aspects of the fun taking place in the area, said “I live and do my business in Jabi. I find this particular environment conducive for fun. They have at least what I can call good security. Didn’t you notice how they check people at the gate before you are allowed to enter? There is adequate parking space inside so at least it is a decent setting, thus I like it. Apart from those aspects I highlighted which are also important for fun seekers, I also like their live band and comedy shows. The management often organize shows where they invite classy comedians from Lagos and Ghana to come and perform live. I have watched TuFace performed here.”
Speaking further, he said, ladies also abound for those who care to pick. “I don’t think they are expensive anyway, though I don’t patronize them (laughs).”
Weekly Trust learnt that most of the ladies hanging around the vicinity of the park live in slums and settlements close to the Garden. Some come from the popular Jabi village, Kpana and Daki Biyu. It was also gathered that the girls mostly come out in search of clients from 9pm. While some do stay inside the garden, buy themselves some drinks and discreetly wait for potential customers, others prefer to lay ambush on motorists outside.
“Some of them will swarm around motorists immediately they stop, sometimes without even waiting for them to fully stop. The desperation is not difficult to see,” Zeb added.
A taxi driver who simply gave his name as Kayode said he is a regular at the place. “I come here to look for passengers. What I observed is that that the girls operate in different ways; if a man wants to take them to his place the price is different, if you are to go with them, the price is different. Their apartments are not far from the vicinity. If you also want to take them to a hotel, not your home, the price is also different. The girls know their ways and are always coming up with new tricks to get customers and avoid arrests.
“I have been taking them to places with their clients. Some of them are my friends. They have my numbers and I have theirs. If they have clients not mobile, they would call me to come and take them either to their place at Jabi village and Daki Biyu, depending on the person, or to take them to the hotel booked by the customer.”
A security man who works around the vicinity but doesn’t want to be named said people still troop in to catch fun, especially at weekends despite several cases of car theft around the fun zone.
“There have been some cases of car theft, but people still come and park their cars here to catch fun. Mostly, if the parking space inside is inadequate, some people do park outside. We do our best to safe guard people’s properties but the truth is that cars are parked at their owners’ risk.”
On the activities of the call girls, the security guard said they are one of the major reasons why the place is lively.
“Oga, the moment these girls stop coming around, it would affect our customer traffic and business. I tell you most of these ‘big people’ do send their drivers to come and pick the girls for them, especially travelers. In fact, some of the girls come on appointments, the ‘big men’ have their phone numbers and once they are in town, they’ll call them to come and meet them here.”
He said some of the girls are students of tertiary institutions, mostly in the East (igboland) and do come around when they are on break or for weekends to hassle according to them (the call girls).
He said the FCTA environmental workers as well as the National Agency for Prohibition of Traffic in Persons have been visiting the vicinity to swoop on the mobile commercial sex workers but have not surfaced for some time now.
“They know that this place is always peaceful, that is why they don’t really bother to come. They only swoop on girls they catch outside the garden as those inside do buy their drinks or stay in company of other people. I tell you some of the girls do have their identification cards. They are mostly students. I don’t know if the I.D cards are fake or real, but they do have.’’
Since the ban on prostitutes and their activities by the authorities, commercial sex workers now operate discreetly to avoid arrest. “We have to know our ways or else the police will arrest you and they will not just collect your money they will also chop you,” said Rita, who told Weekly Trust that she is into the sex trade for want of a better and honourable job to do.
