The police in New-Nyanya, a settlement in Karu Local Government Area in Nasarawa State have arrested a young man who allegedly dropped a gas cylinder suspected to be an improvised explosive device (IED) into the compound of one Mr. Aboho at Ado in the local government area.
Identified as Stephen, the suspect claimed to be a distant relation to Mr. Aboho. He was alleged to have dropped the item inside the compound and driven away without informing the owner of the house who at the time sleeping.
Narrating the story to Daily Sun, Mr. Aboho said he had just retired to bed with his family members at about 9.30 pm when he was woken-up by his barking security dog. According to him, when he flashed light at the gate to check if there was someone at the gate, he spotted a gas cylinder dropped inside his compound.
Scared upon sighting the object that looked like an explosive device, he raised the alarm, which attracted neighbours who helped in evacuating his family members to a friend’s house. He also contacted friends who were able to reach the security operatives.
The quick response of the security operatives and the co0nfirmation that the object was an explosive device heightened tension and anxiety among the residents. The security operatives’ could not remove the object because according to them, they would need more equipment to remove it.
But before 6.00 am, a young man, in his early 30, arrived on a motorbike at the gate of the house. The police, who had taken over the area approached him and demanded to know his mission when he confidently told them he came to pick something he dropped there the previous night.
When they further asked him to identify himself, he told them he was a relation to Mr. Aboho who was called upon and indeed identified him as a distant relation but stated that he had not seen the young man for years.
The suspect was arrested and taken to the New-Nyanya Police station.
