Aha, you went to the heart of it, Shmeckell.

The man who shot Oetzi in the back was from the adjacent Zimmer glacier, and thought that Oetzi was some sort of intruder. Ignoring all pleas to let the stranger go by, he pursued and shot Oetzi. Afterwards, the loudest and most ignorant mountain men said that the Zimmer-man was quite within his rights to shoot anyone who even looked out of place.

Of course, in these more enlightened times, such a thing could never happen.
