ILOVEIT at 19-05-2012 11:09 AM (12 years ago) (m) In the absence of a ‘Will’ in any polygamist’ home it becomes the community’s burden to separate the battle among family members, as to who takes what. In this particular case, whereas the first wife has only two female children, the second wife has five children all boys. The senior wife insisted that the three houses the husband left behind must be shared so that her children can inherit from their father’s wealth even after they leave. But the younger wife argued that the houses will not be shared whenever the girls marries the houses would be left for her boys and the elders of the family were in support of the younger wife’s view and the case was charged to court. How best do you think these properties should be share? No insult pls. pls help me tell d second wife to shut d fu_ck up!! the female children have the equal right to their father inheritance as well.

dc_TenTen at 19-05-2012 11:12 AM (12 years ago) (m) well this can be term as injustice... But the old igbo tradition can be bend in a situation where the man has alot of properties just as someone commented here. some can be given to the girl child but in a situation where it just one house... am sorry to all my lady friends the property goes to the son irrespective of his age. My mum was a victim of this too and she took it in good faith.... But the good tin is if it just one wife and all girls affairs the property belong to the woman till her death and it will now becomes a family affair where the most senior of the kins men control the affair of the said property, but this doesn't mean that the daughters does not have a say in the issue but it just that their voice may not be heard in some wicked families..... This is the more reason modern and educated igbo men have wills that represent them after they have gone......The best legacy any igbo man can give a girl child is strong educational backbone so that in the future she wouldn't lack... father's property or not..... Male or Female should share from family inheritance. Well in this case where the first wife has two daughters and the second wife has five sons, with three houses to share. The first and second wife should be given a house each, while the third house should be given to the children. They can do what they like with the house, put it out for rent and share the money annually or sell the house and share the money equal. Posted: at 19-05-2012 11:14 AM (12 years ago) | Gistmaniac

umm i dont know what clan you come from, but not all igbo clans practice that. when my grandfather died my mom inherited land, and so did her brothers-who inherited more than she did, but the point is she got some inheritance even though she was married off to another tribe and land. Also the male dominance and unfair sharing of inheritance happens when the father doesnt take time to share his property before death. I think once a man hits 40 or 50 he should sit his family down and share his property while alive to avoid all this craziness.
My sister I said dis based on the tradition dat exist b4 I was born.........ur mother inherited d land bcuz her father must have willed d land 2 her while still alive either by written or oral instruction........and datz a wise decision 4rm ur grand father.....if u doubt call ur mother and inquire 4rm her hw she got d land...............dont think dat d kindred allowed her 2 inherit d land just bcuz she is supposed 2 have her own share according 2 ur tradition............its only in a family where there is peace and harmony that the children of d deceased will give some portion of properties 2 d female ones.............In some cases where d male children are still very young..............d kindred will decide 2 show dia wicked and greedy attitude and try 2 force d widow wit her little kids out of the house....which is a very wicked act...........so I dont think its a clan matter in Igbo land......................I have witnessed a man dat has only one female child and his wife died b4 him.............so when d man died............d piece of land he had was taken 4rm the gal..which is not fair.............. if there should be a possibility of amending dis tradition.......it wil be very nice

smartiyke at 19-05-2012 11:44 AM (12 years ago) (m) if dis happened in Naija n Igbo land precisely...........4rm wat I have learnt so far in such case...........The 1st wife wit her two female children wil stay in the house until the children get married n left but none of dem wil inherit any property.....den dat 1st wife wil still remain in the house as long as she is alive.............but the properties will be shared 2 d male children weda they are 4rm the first, second or third wife
That is BS, it doesn't work like that these days hommie. Things are changing, are you sure that you are an Igboman? Posted: at 19-05-2012 11:44 AM (12 years ago) | Upcoming
