Five persons were killed yesterday when suspected cult groups clashed at the Fidei Polytechnic, Gboko, in Gboko Local Government Area of Benue State.
Daily Trust gathered that trouble started on the campus on Wednesday evening when one of the groups claimed that the girlfriend of one of its members was seen in company of a member of another cult group. It was further gathered that the hostilities escalated in the early hours of yesterday with students scampering for safety.
Following that development, the Rector of the polytechnic, Dr. E. C. Ekulide, announced the closure of the institution, and directed the students to keep away from the campus till further notice.
Efforts to get the Gboko police Area Commander and the Rector of the polytechnic, for comments failed, but the Deputy Police Public Relations Officer for the command, ASP Alaribe Ejike, confirmed the incident, saying that only one casualty was recorded.
He said the state’s Commissioner of Police, John Katso, has already deployed anti riot squad to the school, and that three suspects have been arrested in connection with the incident.
