The Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Lagos State, Mr. Ade Ipaye and former President of West Africa Bar Association, Mr. Femi Falana, yesterday cautioned the police against the detention of persons without taking them to the courts, saying the practice was an infringement on their fundamental human rights.

The duo stated this at a training programme for lawyers in the state which was organized by his Ministry in collaboration with the LAWGATE Training Consultants on the Enforcement of Fundamental Human Rights.

According to the Attorney-General ,  the training programme became necessary because it covered the basic principles and rules, adding that the practitioners ought to be deeply grounded in that aspect of the law so that when they were called to make a claim on behalf of indigent citizens they would not be found wanting.

Ipaye added that the two-day training workshop was also meant to equip the judiciary on the concept of fundamental human rights and the rules available in the country, emphasizing that the judiciary must be equipped to meet up with these challenges faced in the course of discharging their duties.
