Umuoji, a quiet, sub-urban community with a difficult terrain and a near-impassable road network in Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra State had a cause to rejoice recently.

As early as 8am, women in the community in their thousands from different villages and clans within the community had converged at the Abor Health Centre, venue of the free medical treatment organized by the Anambra State Association in the United States of America, popularly known as ASA Women, USA. The event, which doubled as a free medical treatment to the local aged women and an awareness campaign against cancer, witnessed a tremendous turnout.

Speaking at the Abor Health Centre/Clinic, Umuoji, Secretary General of the group, Mrs. Josephine Onor said the free medical treatment was part of ASA Women, USA's efforts to get medical care to the grassroots in different parts of the country and Anambra State in particular. She said the essence was to provide medical assistance to the women of Umuoji, adding that the exercise was also to give free maternal care as well as Bosom  and cervical cancer checks on the women which she said had posed great danger to many women.

She said the programme was being done in collaboration with the Anambra State government and other international and individual donor agencies, stressing that the exercise would afford the women the opportunity to benefit from the free awareness campaign on the best way to handle medical problems.

"We also provide free educational services. That is preventive health, because prevention they say is better than cure. Once people have information on how to care for their bodies from hair to toe, the problem of health will be minimized," she said.

On the prevention of the dreaded Bosom  and cervical cancer, Mrs. Onor said when the women, especially the rural women, are educated on the dangers associated with the prevalence of cancer, they would on their own try to prevent the scourge.

The traditional ruler of the community, Igwe Cyril Enweze while addressing the women at the health centre urged them to maximize the free exercise by subjecting themselves to medical checks. Igwe Enweze also maintained that the free medical health was very paramount in the rural areas where rural dwellers do not have access to medical care, adding that the visit by the ASA women was very important now that the people needed it most.

He also attributed the large turnout of the women of the community to what he called proper and aggressive awareness campaign carried out in the community which he said was anchored on the need for the women to participate fully in the exercise. He urged the women to maintain discipline during and after the free medical exercise even as he thanked the organisers for the free medical care.

A women leader, Mr. Mary Ojukwu also described the free medical exercise as very critical to the need of the women of the community, adding that it has further afforded them the opportunity to get more information about the health challenges staring the women in the face. Mrs. Ojukwu further challenged the women to put the lessons learnt from the exercise to use and avoid possible causes of sicknesses around their homes.

Said she: "The exercise will give us the opportunity to access immediate care for our health problems as well as equip us more on the preventive health care so that the avoidable deaths being recorded in the rural communities would be reduced to its barest minimum."

Also speaking, one of the beneficiaries, Mrs. Nkolika Ilodinuno said the message came to the community as a thunderbolt, disclosing that she had to come out to access the drugs because it was free.

"Many of us cannot afford to buy the drugs which they gave us here today, and that was why we saw it as a lifetime opportunity to benefit from this exercise since it is not done every time. So we are happy. And as you can see, it is free for everyone," she said.

The 78 year old widow prayed for the success of the facilitators of the programme, even as she urged other wealthy individuals within and outside the country to put more attention to the medical care of their people.  The exercise also included free medical checks on the women, among which was free high blood pressure check and a number of other checks on the women.

In Imo State, Governor Rochas Okorocha gave not only Free Education to the pupils, they also receive school allowance as obtainable in the civilized societies, while the Northern Leaders carry the Oil money and put in their pockets and allow Mallams and their citizens to come to them (Alhajis) homes for their breakfast, lunch and dinner instead of showing them how to fend for themselves through education.
