The figure represents a performance level of about 93 per cent, pending the decision of a meeting on the Lagos-Ibadan Express Way in a fortnight. Some of the roads include the Port Harcourt/Enugu Express Way, the ongoing project of the dualisation of the Ontisha/Enugu Express Way, the Abuja/Abaji Express Way, Kaduna Express Way, Lokoja Express Way and Kaduna-Kano-Maiduguri Express Way and the Apapa/Oshodi Express Way.
Others are the Eleme Port Harcourt Refinery Road, Ejigbo NNPC Depot Road, the Mosimi Depot in Ikorudu area of Lagos State, Benin-Ore-Shagamu Express Way, Third Mainland Bridge and Vandekya to Obudu Cattel Ranch.
Onolememen, alongside the minister of state, Bashir Yuguda, and special adviser to the president on media and publicity, Dr. Reuben Abati, explained that about N38b accrued to the High Ways Department while about N37b were expended on projects and programmes, representing about 96 per cent performance under the Department.
“Basically, I want to state that the Federal Ministry of Works has received about N44b. Out of that, we have recorded a performance of about 93 per cent. Specifically, in the High Ways Department, about N38 billion has been released and we have expended bout N37 billion on projects and programmes which represents about 96 per cent performance under the High Ways Department,” he said, adding that he also briefed the president on some of the achievements of the ministry and some of the problems it has had.
Onolememen disclosed that the ministry also briefed the president on the presidential initiative project, that is the ongoing project of the dualisation of the Ontisha/Enugu Express Way, the Abuja/Abaji Express Way, Kaduna Express Way, Lokoja Express Way and Kaduna-Kano-Maiduguri Express Way.
Also speaking, minister of state, Yuguda, added that during the presentation, President Jonathan was informed on the progress being made in the areas of road maintenance through Federal Emergency Road Maintenance Agency (FERMA).
“We have acquired state-of-the-art equipment and deployed all of them to the 32 states of the federation” he said, adding that jobs would be created for about 10,000 people around the country.
