[Photos] N6 Million London Taxis Project For Abuja Residents Failed

In 2004 as the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai went out and bought hundreds of new buses and taxis to be used for commercial purposes in and around Abuja as part of efforts to ease the transportation system within the city.

Among the vehicles are the popular "London taxis", which were given out at the rate of N6 million on hire purchase supposedly to commercial transport operators.  However, two years later, the London taxis totally disappeared from the city, while the few buses remaining are struggling to be on the road. Some weeks ago, we tried to find out where these taxis are being kept.  We were able to locate some of them at Shettima Munguno Crescent in the Berger Area of Abuja where they were abandoned after only a few months of use.

May be some of u commenting are staying outside of d country so it wnt realy hurt u guys like dos of us who stay within the country, smtime I envy u guys and feel lk joinning u or asking u guys nt 2 return back. Dis is jst a small thing. Go 2 d backwayard of a nigerian ministry or any parastatal and u wll cry. U wll see a vehicle bought @ 6 or 7 million abandoned after 4 months of usage bcos it ws nt sweviced and d engine knocked and dey hv gone2 buy anodar vehicle instead. All d abandoned cars in gvt offices in nigeria cn seerve 3 african countries.. Ask anybody who knws hw d backyard of gvt institutions are. Wicked nation.
