Tragedy struck in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital on Saturday as an auto crash, involving an 18-seater Toyota Hiace bus belonging to Lukdos Transport Company and articulated lorry marked LAGOS JJJ 489 XB which occured along Abeokuta- Siun-Sagamu expressway claimed 20 lives.
Our correspondent gathered that the passengers of the ill fated Lagos-bound bus, who until their death, were members of African Church Solution camp located along Sam Ewang Estate in Abeokuta, were reportedly travelling to attend a wedding ceremony holding in Lagos for one of their members, before the unfortunate incident happened.
An eye-witness account said that the accident occurred at about 7.30am when the truck coming from an opposite direction lost control and rammed into the bus, which accounted for the untimely death of 18 passengers on the spot, while the two others died on the way to the hospital.
Another witness said that a 2- year-old girl who was also in the bus sustained head injury and had since been admitted and attended to at the State General Hospital, Ijaiye, Abeokuta.
When our correspondent visited the scene of the incident, officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), State Fire Service, Ogun State Ambulance Services, Police and Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency (TRACE) were seen extricating the mangled bodies of the victims from the dismantled bus.
Meantime, the TRACE coordinator, Sola Bamidele, who was at the scene blamed the truck driver for driving recklessly, but said that the authority was still trying to get in touch with the transport company to get the manifest of the passengers.
The coordinating officer of the Ogun State Ambulances Services, Hassan Adelakun, also confirmed the death of some of the passengers and those who died on their way to the hospital.
He said that the remains of the victims had been deposited at the morgues of both the State General Hospital, Ijaiye and Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Idi-Aba, Abeokuta.
