Because it likely did not exist in "the olden days" because the virus (or retrovirus) that weakens and destroys the body's immune system, thereby allowing other opportunistic illnesses to take hold, did not exist then or had not made its way into humans.  The first probable case was in 1959, and they did not know what it was.  But in the early `980's there was an explosion.

AIDS is very, very real, sadly.  Don'tt you be no fool.
