A four-month-old baby, identified by his mother simply as Godsliving, has been detained with the mother, Miss Emem Nse Nana, by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) Akwa Ibom State command, over issues of illicit drug.

The mother of the baby, Emem, who was in the caged room at the NDLEA state command headquarters, Uyo said she was arrested with the baby while selling Indian hemp for the brother who had left for work and instructed her to go ahead with the sales on his behalf.

The nursing mother claimed she was from Ikot Ekpene and was arrested alongside her father more than a month ago, while conducting the hemp sales for the brother.

She said she never knew that Indian hemp was internationally recognized as illicit drug, as such, she was helping her brother to sell the item to get enough commission to take care of herself and the baby, since the father of the child had abandoned them.

Daily Sun could not, however, meet the father of the suspect or the grandfather of Baby Godsliving to corroborate or refute her daughter’s claim.

But some officers of the NDLEA said Emem was not actually a detainee, but was undergoing rehabilitation because she was regarded as a victim instead of a trafficker of hard drugs.

“She doesn’t sleep here because of the baby. See her bed outside; but we had to put her here because of the event that we are having today. Even at that, this room has a bed with mosquito treated net, a television and a video machine for her pleasure. In the night we will take her to sleep on another there (pointing to a bed by the reception of the office).

Earlier while briefing the press, as part of events to mark the 2013 World Drug-Free Day which has the theme: “The New Psychotropic Substances” with the slogan: “Make Health Your New High in Life,” the state commander of the agency, Mrs. Josephine Obi said her command had arrested 207 persons on matters relating to drug abuse and illicit trafficking.

Obi said there had also been a seizure of 104.59kg of drugs and gave a breakdown of the statistics to be 175 male suspects, 32 female suspects, 104.394kg of cannabis sativa, 0.103kg of cocaine, 0.090kg of heroin and 22 and a half litres of psychotropic substances popularly called, combine.

According to her, the agency had also secured 14 convictions, counseled 95 drug abusers, and presented enlightenment lectures in schools and other fora across the state.

She said to continue in the fight against drug abuse and illicit trafficking, the state command had lined up events to mark this year’s celebration, such as rallies across the state, special lectures to enlighten the public on the increasing dangers of drug abuse and illicit trafficking, signs of drug abuse and how to avoid drug abuse, with particular emphasis on the new psychotropic substances in all the local government areas of the state from July 2 to 4, 2013

She urged all members of the public to take advantage of the celebration and join the agency in the war against drug abuse and illicit trafficking for their own good and also to safeguard the lives of their loved ones to ensure a safe, healthy and secured society where there would be peace and development.
