The Public Relations Officer of the university, Mr. Abiodun Olarewaju, in a statement, had debunked the rumour, saying that the lady never intended to terminate the baby’s life but gave birth before the expected date of delivery.
“There was a delivery of a baby boy by an inexperienced mother who, in her naivety, thought she was pressed by call of nature while she was actually in labour pains.
Prior to the child’s delivery, the young, inexperienced mother had experienced ‘thotimiat’, as she was bleeding and went to the toilet only to discover that something expelled into the water closet.” The OAU Health Centre matron, Mrs. Mary Oyeleke, said that she would be discharged today (Friday).
The PRO said there was no point not discharging the mother and the new baby since they have been found medically fit. When Campus Square reporter met the happy mother, Oyinlola, she described the allegation as untrue. “It is a blatant lie. I was purging all over the night and I had no idea of what labour pain was. Actually, I can’t call it labour pain because I was going to the toilet throughout the night till that fateful morning.
I went through pain going to the toilet all through the night. I went to the toilet that morning to defecate. There was this force that just came out and the baby came out and entered into the closet. I was just there standing and bleeding. People came out when they saw blood coming out of the toilet to help me,” she said.
She said a friend, Satope, approached the toilet and found the baby and called an elderly cleaner for assistance. According to her, she was scared because she was not expecting the baby that day.
“Seeing the baby was terrifying because I was not expecting the baby to come out yet,” she said. She described motherhood as a thing of joy, saying, “It is overwhelming, it’s unexplainable; I can’t explain it. I don’t know how I feel but it’s really great and wonderful.”
Oyinola debunked insinuations that she attempted running away when one of the cleaners saw her. “That is untrue! Moremi hostel’s toilet is a public place where everybody comes in almost at the same time to fetch water, have their bath and other sanitary things.
People were everywhere while I was in the toilet. Just like me, everybody was scared when they saw me and they had to call the cleaner for help because she is an elderly person. She carried out the baby and brought us down to the health centre for post-natal treatment,” she said.
The young mother, who is a native of Ijabe in Osun State, promised to keep the baby. “I leave everything to God. Nobody told me what I am now and it is definitely God that will do it. I will work along with God,” she said. Oyinola said the rumour has turned her to a celebrity on campus. “Did you interview me before this incident? You are now interviewing me; it is already gone round the school gate. It is the latest topic within and outside OAU. I am joyous, excited and happy.
I am grateful to God; I bless God.” Although her first son has brought her joy, the young mother said she was not in a hurry for a second child. When asked how soon to expect the younger baby, she laughed and said: “Oh no! Not soon.”
Earlier, officials of the Security Unit, Satope corrobated what Oyinola narrated. She stated her friend, who was staying off campus, chose to spend the night of June18 in the school to enable her prepare for exams the next day. According to her, Oyinola started complaining of stomach upset at midnight and was visiting the toilet frequently.
Few minutes to 7:00am, the roommates suggested that she should be taken to the University Health Centre to enable her write the exam in good health. “At this point, she went back to the toilet and when I couldn’t see her on time, I traced her and later discovered that she had given birth in the toilet.
I was amazed at the sight of the baby and I called for help from cleaners, one of whom who later assisted us in taking the baby from the water closet to the health centre. She did not intend to flush the baby as speculated but gave birth before her due date which falls in July as she was ignorant of the signs,” she said. Efforts to see the father, a 400 level Mechanical Engineering student was unsuccessful, as he was reported to have gone for examinations. Akinola is a 400 level student of Political Science, OAU.
