•The Law Is Anti Islam – Senator Sani Yarima
In the ongoing constitution amendment the Nigerian Senate yesterday pegged the marriage age at 18. A development many have welcomed with a sigh of relieve.
But Senator Sani Yerima former Zamfara State Governor protested against the age limit immediately after the vote had been passed and said that the law was anti Islam.
"Under Islamic law, any woman that is married is of age and if you say 18 years you are going against Islamic law," said Yarima.
It should be recalled that Senator Sani Yarima was reported in 2010 to have married a 13-year-old girl from Egypt whose father was said to be his driver.
Laws like this should be enacted to protect vulnerable groups like women, physical challenged people and children.
