Chidi LIoyd may not see 2015 Election

The Majority Leader of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Hon Chidi Lloyd was on Tuesday arraigned before a Port Harcourt High Court on a six-count charge bordering on attempted murder, conspiracy, intent to maim, wound and disfigure,  assault, unlawful grievous harm and malicious damage to government property. Justice Latan Nyordee said the accused person’s plea could be taken since he has been properly arraigned before the court. Honourable Lloyd entered a “not guilty” plea to the charges.The judge however ruled that Lloyd should be remanded in prison custody till Wednesday, August 7, when ruling would be delivered on his bail application.The defence counsel, Beluolisa Nwafor, SAN had notified the court of the bail application after Lloyd entered his plea. Nwafor said the bail application was in line with Section 118 (124) of the Criminal Procedure, Laws of Rivers State Cap 37 Sections 33, 34 (1a), 35 (1). (4), 36 (Cool of the 1999 Constitution.He urged the court to discountenance the counter affidavit tendered by the police against the bail application as he made reference to Subsection 5 of Section 35 of the Criminal Law, he stated that a person is deemed innocent until a competent court rules otherwise.While urging the court to admit Lloyd to bail on self recognition, he pointed out that his client willfully turned himself in to the police and as such would make himself available for trial.The Rivers State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr Nwogu Boms applied for the withdrawal of the counter-affidavit tendered by the police as he stated that his office was ready to go ahead with the trial of the matter.Lloyd is being prosecuted pursuant to the disorder that rocked the Rivers State House of Assembly on July 9 after 5 members tried to impeach the Speaker, Hon Otelemaba Amachree. A fight resulted after in which some of the members of the House were wounded. Hon Lloyd was seen in a video that was posted on the internet using the mace as a weapon.
