With the growing awareness of making better and healthier choices to preserve our health and prevent disease, one of the first changes we make is relation to water consumption.

There are different types of liquids available for our consumption viz fruit juice, vegetable juice, soft drinks, carbonated drinks, alcohol, non-alcoholic, hot chocolate, teas, coffee, cappuccino, etc. and water, obviously for most, features on the lower rung.

Then, you finally decide to embrace water, since it has no enemy! You overcome all your initial resistance that it has no taste and just does not ‘cut it’ for you when it comes to certain meals or like we say in our local parlance, some drinks ‘push down the food better’!

Then you are further informed that drinking cold water is probably not the best for you, and then it is time to condition your mind to another change—-drinking hot water! After all, change is the only constant thing in life.

There are different schools of thought on cold or hot water consumption and it is interesting to take a look at them. The proponents of hot water allege that drinking hot liquids after a meal, aids digestion whereas cold liquids after a meal solidify fats in the stomach, which can cause digestive problems. They believe the cold water will solidify the oily stuff that has just been consumed and this slows down digestion. Once the sludge reacts with acid, it will break down and be absorbed by the intestine faster than the solid food, thus lining the intestine, which eventually turns to fat. They will readily state the time – honoured practice of the Chinese of having hot water or tea with their meals.

The cold water proponents, on the other hand, say when you consume cold water, your body has to convert it to a temperature it can use to hydrate the body. So, cold water burns calories because the body needs to heat up the water in order to use it. This definitely is exciting news for those looking out to lose weight; burning a few more calories by drinking cold water?

There are those who play it safe and mix hot water with cold or room temperature water (50:50) to drink their water tepid or lukewarm. Some experts believe that drinking either hot or cold water will serve the main purpose of hydrating the body.

Life is all about choices! So is it cold, hot, tepid or just room temperature water for you? You decide what works best for you. Truth is, cold water is cool and refreshing! Hot water is great in the morning as it helps to flush the kidneys as well as help with bowel movements. If it is hot, make sure it does not scald your tongue. Ensure you drink enough water daily to hydrate you. It is a great thirst quencher.

I wish you optimum health and wellness!
