A 36-year old Personal Assistant to the former chairman of Otuoke Community Development Committee (CDC) in Ogbia Local Government Area of Bayelsa State has been arrested for allegedly molesting to death an 18 year old girl.

Otuoke is the hometown of Nigeria President Goodluck Jonathan.

The suspected rapist was arrested by the police as he tried to dispose of the corpse in the early hours of Thursday.

Indigenes and residents of Otuoke said that the suspect resides in an uncompleted building owned by his boss, the former council chairman.

An eyewitness who pleaded anonymity alleged that the suspected rapist was apprehended by an officer of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps (NSCDC). He said:

“We saw the civil defense officer dragging the suspect and shouting that he has raped a girl to death.”

According to the source, the suspect claimed that he met the girl on the ground writhing in pain and asking for help. He added:

”He told the crowd that he met the girl while she was on the ground and in pain. He said the girl told him that she took poison due to frustration she has been experiencing in her life.”

The Bayelsa Police Command spokesman, Mr. Alex Akhigbe, confirmed the incident. He said that the suspect had been transferred to the State Police Headquarters for further investigation while the corpse was deposited at the Kolo General Hospital.
