Since the Vigilante Youths Group, also referred to as Civilian JTF or ‘Yan Gora’ in Borno State began operations in complementing the efforts of the military JTF in the arrest and curbing of activities of the dreaded Boko Haram sect, many of these youths have not gone unscathed from retaliating sect members. The latest attack was penultimate Thursday. SADIQ ABUBAKAR,Maiduguri, captures events leading to the deaths of these brave warriors with a look at how the JTF could better utilise the youths while also protecting their lives

June 2013 was when the Yan Gora, popularly known and addressed as Civilian JTF boldly took to the streets of Maiduguri city, ransacking houses and carrying out body searches on pedestrians and motorists as well as riders. The women were not left out; several of them were exposed when they were found carrying IEDs and other weapons. Day and night, during routine searches, many insurgents were caught in their hideouts, trapped, arrested and handed over to the security agencies for further action or interrogation. Some of the insurgents caught in the shootout got killed instantly while others died in detention from bullet wounds.

Regrettably, on the other side, the civilian JTF also lost their lives prematurely when the Boko Haram sect members invaded some towns and villages and sporadically opened fire at the innocent people either at the market, mosques, on the streets or in an ambush.
