Presidential Steering Council on National Integrated Power projects (NIPP) chaired by Vice President Goodluck Jonathan met at the State House on Monday.
A total of N283 billion was approved by the committee for improved power supply in the country.
The committee noted that much of its success would be determined by the success of the amnesty deal offered the Niger Delta militants by the Federal Government.
The meeting coincided with the release of leader of the Movement for the Emancipation of Niger Delta (MEND), Henry Okah, from detention in Jos, as part of the amnesty deal.
Addressing newsmen after the meeting, Minister of State for Power, Nuhu Wya, as well as Ekiti State Governor, Segun Oni, and his Abia State counterpart, Theodore Orji, who are members of the council, announced the approval of N267.61 billion for work on Geregu and Omotosho plants.
They also announced N20.41 billion (N15.4 billion plus $13.5 million) for the rehabilitation of eight critical Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN) transmission lines across the country, particularly, the Jalingo transmission lines.
According to Wya, the peace in the Niger Delta was a sure hope of guaranteeing regular power supply to Nigeria as the country would be sure of regular and quality gas supply to power electricity turbines across the country. Relevant Links
He further explained that inadequate gas has resulted to overuse of hydro power generating stations but that the pressure on them reduced their capacity with consequent shutting down of some of the generating plants.
"We are hoping as the amnesty is unfolding, peace in Niger Delta and the damaged pipes now will be put back in functional application very shortly so that we can have enough gas to generate the required capacity" Wya said.
He disclosed that the power contracts approved were within the second phase programme of the NIPP which will cover Omotosho and Geregu power plants and the transmission lines that will transmit the generated electricity.
