A 40-year-old man won justice for himself and his siblings earlier this month when their prostitute mother was jailed for six years .
He said yesterday: “I’m living the life I deserve and feel normal for the first time in my life.
“We had a life of hell as children and it took me years to build up the courage to take that woman to court.
“But with my three sisters, we did it and we told the world what was done to us by the people we should have been able to trust the most, our parents.”
The father of three cannot be named to protect the identity of his sisters.
Their 58-year-old mother from Co Down, her estranged husband, her two brothers and two lovers, a former RUC Reservist and a baker, were before Belfast Crown Court for sentence on a total of 49 charges, dating from the summer of 1977 to the spring of 1988.
All but one is in jail now serving between one and six years after pleading guilty and one is serving a suspended sentence in the community.
The abuse survivor said: “Our voice has been heard and I’d encourage anyone who has been abused to try to find a way to take their abusers to court.
“The truth came out in the end despite the fact they all initially denied the charges. Their guilty pleas came as a massive relief because it meant we would not have to stand up in court and relive everything in front of a jury.
“I don’t know how the girls would’ve coped. It might have been too much for them. And while I was dreading it, I was prepared to do it to get to justice. That was my goal and we achieved it.”
The survivor’s earliest memories have been plagued by images of his mother abusing him and forcing him to watch as she slept with her own brothers.
His pervert mother was jailed for six years on April 11 after pleading guilty to 17 counts of cruelty involving all four children, and six of gross indecency involving her son, and two of her daughters.
Her 60-year-old estranged husband, who admitted 17 charges of cruelty by wilful neglect and assault, was jailed for four years.
Former RUC reservist Thomas Fitzpatrick, 43, was jailed for 18 months, after admitting one count of indecent assault and one count of gross indecency during which the son was required to watch him sleep with his mum.
