Acting Ukrainian President Alexandr Turchynov ordered the inauguration ceremony for his newly elected successor be held at Independence Square in central Kiev, according to the presidential press service.

The location, the main site of anti-government protests that led to the ouster of the previous government, was chosen to pay tribute to activists who sacrificed their lives for Ukraine, the presidential press service said in a statement.

The exact date of the inauguration has not been set yet, but local analysts expect it to take place in early June.

Earlier in the day, the country’s Central Electoral Commission announced businessman Petro Poroshenko had won the presidential elections in the first round with 54.7 percent of the vote.

Poroshenko was a major supporter of the anti-government rallies, which led to the ouster of President Viktor Yanukovych.

Protests in Ukraine began last November to back the country’s European integration and turned violent in February, when more than 100 people were killed.
