The thirteenth match of the FIFA World Cup 2014 is finally today as Nigeria's Super Eagles are hoping to extend their undefeated streak in international matches against Iran, in a fixture with there is no room for error as World Cup favourites Argentina and wildcards Bosnia-Herzegovina are also featuring on the same group.

Reportedly, "their coach is their biggest weapon because he’s well experienced, he knows the game well,” Keshi told Fifa.com

“For the Iran game, we have to be focused. We have to concentrate and do our job. We’re not going to take Iran lightly because they’re not going to take us lightly, so we have to go out with everything that we have.

“They have a very good coach and I’m sure they also have some quality players. We don’t know Iran very well, but we’ll see them.”
Nigeria is the current Africa Cup of Nations champion. It will miss its defender Elderson Echiejile who has recently suffered an injury. Nigeria will depend a lot on players like Victor Moses, Chelsea’s John Obi Mikel, Emmanuel Emenike and goalkeeper Vincent Enyeama, while captain Joseph Yobo could make his 100th appearance for his country against Argentina in the final group game. It will be one of the most fabulous teams to watch, but it has not reached the World Cup knockout stages since 1998. This year, 2014, will be its fight against history.

And Keshi is relying on them to guide his young squad.

“You can’t buy this sort of experience. I pray that Enyeama, Yobo and Obi Mikel will bring all their experience. Youth is good, but if we can combine youth and experience that will be great.”

Coach Stephen Keshi has declared that the Super Eagles are set to crush the national team of Iran when they trade tackles today by 8:00pm local time.

With the crops of players and the friendly matches played by the Joseph Yobo skippered team;

Do you think the Super Eagles have what it takes to crush Iran?

Did You Know?

  • Iran have won only one of their nine games at the World Cup, against USA in 1998 (2-1).
  • Carlos Queiroz’s side have never kept a clean sheet in a World Cup game.
  • Nigeria are winless in their last eight World Cup games (D2 L6). It’s the longest current drought among the 32 teams taking part in 2014.

  • The one previous meeting between Iran and Nigeria came in a friendly in 1998; the Super Eagles won 1-0.
  • No team scored more goals than Iran in the 2014 Asian World Cup qualifiers (30).
  • Nigeria’s three goals at the 2010 World Cup all came from set piece situations (one penalty, one direct free kick and one from a throw-in).

  • Over half (11/21) of the goals that Nigeria have conceded at World Cups have come from set plays, however (three corners, two direct free kicks, four indirect free kicks and two penalties).
  • No goalkeeper kept more clean sheets in the top five European leagues in 2013/14 than Nigeria’s Vincent Enyeama (21, for Lille).
  • The last victory of Nigeria at the World Cup was in France 1998 against Bulgaria. It ended 1-0, scored by Victor Ikpeba in the 26th minute.
  • It is 3 days less 16 years without a win for Nigeria at the World Cup. Last victory was on the 19th June 1998.
  • No member of the Nigeria’s squad has ever score in a World Cup; Yobo made an assist in 2002.

The Iranian national team are not happy with the perception of many soccer fans and opponents in the Brazil World Cup. They are saddened when people refer to them as the whipping team of Group F even before the first ball is kicked today against Nigeria. And so, they have agreed to use Nigeria’s game today to gain global recognition.

“We are not bothered by what people think of us. Everywhere you go you hear people say that we are the poor members of our group, but Monday will show who actually is the poor team here,” he said.

We will definitely try to make our country proud. Our first and main objective is against Nigeria and we have to focus on that.”  Also speaking on the team’s chances against Nigeria, goalkeepers\ coach, Dan Gaspar believes his team will earn the respect of soccer fans around the world if they beat Nigeria.

“We are probably the team that is the least recognized, the least known of all the other 31 teams,” he said, adding, “but the one thing that I can guarantee is that after 90 minutes we will earn the respect of the Nigerians, we will earn the respect of the football fans and the world will begin to recognize the level of play that we have on our team.

“The players are confident yet humble. This team is prepared to sacrifice, to suffer, to fight with humility and represent Iran the best possible way.”

To tell the truth I am surprised Iran is EVEN in the competition. What with bullets amd bombs exploding everyday and everywhere in their country. And people being killed every second.

I wish them the best of luck - it must be hard for them to concentrate and train for their matches especially not knowing what is happening to family and friends back home.

GOOD LUCK TO BOTH TEAMS.
HOWEVER BETTER LUCK TO NIGERIA!

what is with these  African footballers (attackers) falling down in front of their opponents net, looking for penalty, instead of
shooting the ball in the net.   Angry Angry
