Abuja — Activities at National Assembly were on Wednesday grounded due to power failure that lasted for almost eight working hours.
Workers who arrived the complex as early as 8.00 a.m. met the place lighted, but the blackout dawned on the complex two hours later when the Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN) 'struck'.
The power generating set to complement PHCN also failed the complex.
Its panels were said to be bad. But the panels meant for distributing power to other adjoining buildings within the Assembly worked.
The failing power situation forced all the bank branches in the White House, which is the main building, to shut down services.
It occurred shortly after House of Representatives Speaker, Dimeji Bankole, left the Assembly for Abuja International Airport on his way to Saudi Arabia for Umrah.
His counterpart at the Senate, David Mark, was away from the complex.
Before lawmakers went on recess last month, the situation had halted proceedings at the House, forcing them to adjourn abruptly.
In the recent situation, doors electrically-operated could not open due to the power failure.
Lifts at the White House housing offices of top personalities of the National Assembly could not be operated as lawmakers and workers scrambled to use the few staircases available.
Office of Deputy Clerk of the National Assembly, Ogunyomi Oluyemi, was thrown open for the whole day to allow for ventilation.
Oluyemi, who is standing in for the NASS Clerk, Nasiru Arab, currently on terminal leave, was seen giving instructions on how to quickly resolve the problem.
He regretted that the panels currently in use were procured by management in 1999, saying there was need to replace them.
He also blamed authorities of the PHCN for what he described as their non-cooperative attitude on the power needs of the National Assembly.
