A Deputy Director in the Federal Department of Livestock and Pest Control Services of the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Water Resources was on Monday kidnapped along with his driver on their way to Benin on an official assignment.
The Deputy Director identified as Abubakar was said to be going to Benin to represent the Minister  of  Agriculture Alhaji  Abba  Ruma at the annual conference of the Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria holding in the Edo State capital when he was abducted.

It was  gathered that Abubakar who was in a Hilux Jeep with Federal Government plate number had a lunch with his driver at Lokoja, the Kogi State capital, where he last communicated with his office in Benin telling them that he was on his way.

It was also learnt that Abubakar later in the day informed the Benin office that he was being held somewhere in Benin by some gun men whom he said abducted him between Auchi and Ekpoma in Edo State and there after handed over the phone to the kidnappers who told the officers in Benin to contact the Minister to come with N20 million if he wanted his officer and the driver released.

The kidnappers were also said to have contacted the family of Abubakar in Abuja on Monday night, threatening to kill him and his driver if they failed to deposit the N20 million at a designated location in Benin within 24 hours.  When our correspondent called at the field office along High Court road, GRA, Benin yesterday, though the office was open, none of the staff was available as they were said to have gone into hiding  as a result of alleged intermittent calls being put to them by the kidnappers.

When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) Edo State Police Command Peter Ogboi said he was yet to be informed of the incident, promising to contact the DPOS at Auchi and Ekpoma.

This is an amazing issue.... i think it is time the goverment did something about this; that seems to be an enjoyable occupation for some significant and mean crew. We also have to know that "all this is" jeopardizing the reputation and image of our country.... the only thing we Nigerians are known for which is good is "FOOTBALL" not even now this image was created it was far years back by our heroes.  in other remification we are absolutely -0 (Minus Zero) in the presence of other realms.
