Poor remuneration in the health sector is largely responsible for the brain drain of medical personnel to other countries for greener pastures, the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria (NMCN) has said.

The council also listed the responsible factors to include poor infrastructural facilities and inadequate funding of some nursing educational institutions in the country.

Speaking during the 12th Biennial Conference of Nurses, NMCN Chairman Mrs. Rebecca Aikhomu said one of the main challenges being faced is the gross inadequacy of qualified nursing manpower in Nigeria.

The conference, which has the theme ‘Capacity development for sustainable reforms in Nursing education and practice’, is geared towards bringing nursing leaders together to articulate strategies for sustaining the reforms in education and practice, towards promoting qualitative healthcare delivery to Nigerians.

Prof. Adeleke Ojo of the Department of Nursing at the Igbinedion University, in his keynote address, appealed to the nurses to remain focused and undaunted in their chosen profession
