A devoted couple who were married for 67 years have died of natural causes within two hours of each other
Hugh Nees, 94, lost his battle with cancer in the room he shared with his wife at Eldon Lodge rest home near Wellington, New Zealand,
Just two hours later his wife Joan, 92, suffered a stroke and also died.
The couple said on many occasions that they could not live without each other.
Their son Robert explained that the devoted couple had moved to the care home only two months ago due to their declining health.
He toldUs That he took solace in the fact that due to his mother’s stroke and his father’s illness, neither of them would have been aware the other had died or was dying.
‘Their departure, it’s sad but happy. Life wasn’t easy for the last little while and that’s over, that’s all good,’ he said.
Robert’s sister Joy called the times of her parents’ deaths a ‘miracle’.
Despite their close bond, life for Hugh and Joan wasn’t always easy.
Two of their five children died before they did, and their 31-year-old grandson was shot dead by robbers in Argentina last year.
Although the couple may not have been fully aware during the last few hours of their lives, Robert said they were surrounded by family members and very comfortable.
