About 90,000 Soldiers where half were Nigerians fought for the British Empire in World War II (WWII). According to a video, more than 90,000 West Africans were deployed to southeast Asia after 1943, with more of than half of them Nigerian. If you don’t know this bit of information, then you'll be forgiven. While there’s a lot of talk of the West, and some talk of the Indian and Gurkhas who helped in the campaign to drive the Japanese out of Burma, there’s barely any mention of the West Africans, and in particular Nigerians who were also involved in the effort. Allied commander General William Slim did not mention the African soldiers in his speech thanking the 14th army. What’s very heartbreaking is how little of this is discussed in both British history via school curriculum, but more importantly Nigerian history. I guess when Nigeria rarely discusses its own civil war, it'll be a task to get them to discuss their involvement in world war 2. Same can also be said of the little recognition, African Americans also got for their efforts in World War II. Seventy years on, many remain bitter that their contribution was never recognized fully. This is their story, of surviving two years of intense jungle warfare, of helping secure Victory over Japan, through exclusive, never before seen footage of West Africa divisions fighting in Burma, courtesy of the Imperial War Museum, and Royal Commonwealth Ex-Services League.
It was only a few years ago the USA congress said thank you to the blacks who fought for the USA in WW2!
I don't why we bother.
And painfully we still have THOUSANDS of young Nigeria born boys and girls signing up in the British, American and Canadian armies in order to get CITIZENSHIP!
TERRIBLE. No western foriegner signs up to the Nigeria army even as a reserve!
