A 65-year-old man, Joseph Olaleye, is now in police custody for allegedly killing a three-year-old boy, Abdullahi Razak, at Ota area in Ado-Odo/Ota Local Government Area of Ogun State. The incident occurred about 1pm on Monday at Olowosatide, Ijako, Ota, when the suspect and the father of the deceased, Mr Olalekan Razak, were said to be fighting.

Olaleye reportedly threw an ignited kerosene stove at Razak, who is his tenant. But the stove fell on Abdullahi, causing him severe injuries. The boy was confirmed dead at the hospital where he was rushed to. The state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Muyiwa Adejobi, said in a statement that the accused would be charged to court after investigation into the matter.

The state Commissioner of Police, CP Abdulmajid Ali, according to the statement, described the incident as unfortunate. Adejobi said Ali had directed that the suspect be charged to court after investigation. The commissioner, however, sympathised with members of the family of the boy and assured them, as well as Good people of Ogun State, of justice in the matter. Meanwhile, police yesterday ordered the operators of pubs and other liquor joints in the state to close shop by 10pm henceforth.

The order came barely 24 hours after three persons were killed and a car and houses were razed during a cult war in Abeokuta, the state capital. The police said any operator of such pubs and liquor centres, who failed to comply with the order, would be arrested for breaching the security laws of the state. A statement issued by Adejobi indicated that Ali gave the directive. Adejobi noted that the order became necessary in view of investigation which showed that patrons of liquor centres tend to lose sense of decency and prone to commit security breaches after 10pm.

He added that the police would treat any proprietor of pubs and liquor joints caught violating the order as aiding and abetting criminals in the state. The PPRO, however, added that club houses across the state would have the grace of closing by midnight. It was gathered that the police directive might not be unconnected with the outbreak of cult violence in Abeokuta on Monday.

Three persons were killed and three houses razed during the incident when some suspected members of Aiye and Eiye confraternities clashed in Ago-Odo and Elega areas of the state capital. One vehicle was burnt while about 10 others were also vandalised in the incident.

It was learnt that preliminary investigation revealed that the cult clash was fallout of the disagreement between rival cult members at a popular pub within the MKO Abiola International Stadium, Abeokuta. No fewer than 124 suspects have since been arrested for cult-related activities in Abeokuta, Igbesa and Ilaro areas of the state.

I keep wondering why the rate of crime in older people are higher than that of the younger generations lately. They have failed in their youths and now taking their frustrations on innocent souls to get rich at the very last minute. God is watching
