Governors of the Nineteen northern States under the auspices of the Northern States Governors’ Forum have summoned an emergency meeting to discuss recent happenings in the region, particularly the recent fracas between the Army and the Shi’ites followers under the Islamic Movement, which led to deaths in Zaria, Kaduna State.
Governor of Borno State, Kashim Shettima, who doubles as Chairman of the Northern Governors Forum, announced on Wednesday night that the 19 Governors will be holding an emergency meeting on Saturday in Kaduna. The venue and time of the meeting has been communicated to members of the forum, he noted.
Shettima’s spokesman, Malam Isa Gusau said in a statement issued at 11pm last night that the decision followed consultations between the Governors on Wednesday night after reviewing recent developments in parts of northern Nigeria.
He said the northern Governors were worried by the situation and hence their resolve to wade into the matter with a view to frontally addressing the problem.
Quote
“The Governors call on citizens and all parties associated with the incident in Zaria to be calm and exercise restraint, assuring that far reaching steps will be taken to guarantee restoration of normalcy in a sustained manner. “The Governors call on citizens to go about their activities peacefully and in obedience to lawful provisions.
“The forum reaffirmed that Governments across the nineteen States would at all times take measures that will promote peace and public safety as well as justice and fairness to all citizens in line with constitutional provisions”,
he said in the statement
