NATIONAL Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Vincent Ogbulafor, yesterday, urged Vice President Goodluck Jonathan to wait for God’s intervention as power belongs to God.
This is coming on the heels of repeated calls by eminent Nigerians, Civil Society organizations, media chiefs and other bodies across the country, that President Umaru Yar’Adua, who has been away in Saudi Arabia on medical attention, in the last 73 days, should properly hand over power to Vice President Jonathan in acting capacity.
Ogbulafor, in a statement titled “Goodwill message from the Peoples’ Democratic Party to the Vice President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan, GCON,” said: “Furthermore, the words of the Holy Scripture in Psalm 62:11 are apt for this moment, that ‘God has spoken once, twice, I have heard this: That power belongs to God.’”
In the statement which was delivered by Prince Vincent Eze Ogbulafor at the Presidential Villa on behalf of the party, the national chairman said the party was praying for the full recovery of President Yar’Adua, “so that he can return and rejoin his team to realize the lofty goals he has set to achieve for our dear country.”
Part of the statement read: “Permit me, Your Excellency to, on behalf of the National Working Committee, the National Executive Committee and the entire members of the PDP to convey to you our fraternal greetings, immense goodwill and solidarity.
“We wish to place on record our deepest satisfaction with the manner you have steered the ship of state in the absence of his Excellency, the President and Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces, Alhaji Umaru Yar’Adua, GCFR. Your Excellency, like all Nigerians from different spheres of life, we have been keenly following events and developments in the country since the departure of Mr. President for medical attention.
Throughout this period, you have demonstrated patriotism and an enviable measure of loyalty and statesmanship. You have, through exemplary selflessness held the government and the country together in spite of the mischief of a few.
“We are particularly delighted with the prompt manner you handled the crisis in Jos, Plateau State. We also wish to appreciate your prompt response, on behalf of the government of Nigeria, to the tragedy in Haiti. We wish to, once again, commend you for doing everything possible to ensure the smooth functioning of the affairs of government.
“You have discharged your duties in the absence of Mr. President with distinction. We are proud that you have refused to be distracted by needless debates and controversies originating from some of our opponents. We maintain our earlier assertion that with you effectively on the saddle, there is no vacuum in the Presidency.
On behalf of the Peoples’ Democratic Party, I pledge our unalloyed support to you as you continue to steer the ship of our nation. You can count on our support in this regard at all times. Furthermore, the word of the Holy Scripture in Psalm 62:11 is apt for this moment, that ‘God has spoken once, twice I have heard this: That power belongs to God’”.
The hierarchy of the Peoples’ Democratic Party, PDP, was, last night, locked in a closed door meeting with PDP senators in a move directed at breaking the Senate’s resolve that President Umaru Yar’Adua transmit a letter of his medical vacation to the National Assembly.
Last night’s meeting was scheduled ahead of today’s appearance before the Senate by the Special Adviser to the President on National Assembly Matters, Senator Mohammed Abba Aji.
Vanguard learnt that Senator Abba Aji is expected to explain his side of the briefing given to the Senate by Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Alhaji Yayale Ahmed that President Yar’Adua indeed prepared a letter on his vacation which was hijacked.
PDP moves to check Senate
The meeting of the PDP Senate caucus with the PDP national working committee was announced by President of the Senate, Senator David Mark at the beginning of yesterday’s plenary session.
Though Senator Mark did not give the agenda for the meeting, Vanguard gathered that the meeting, which is at the initiative of the PDP NWC, was aimed at softening the stance of the PDP dominated Senate on the absence of the President. President Yar’Adua who has been out of the country for more than 73 days was, penultimate Wednesday, urged, through the Senate’s unanimous resolution, to transmit a letter of his medical vacation to the National Assembly in accordance with section 145 of the Constitution.
The PDP has 91 members in the 109 Senate, with majority belonging to the 80 member Nigeria Interest Group, NIG, which spearheaded the Senate resolution. Last night’s meeting, it was gathered, sought to stave the resolve of the NIG senators to forge ahead with further action against President Yar’Adua next Wednesday.
Though no ultimatum was given in the resolution to the President, members of the NIG are, however, believed to have quietly agreed on a maximum of two weeks before taking further actions against the ailing President.
