North Central governors tip Sarah Jibril for Vice-President

By Tom Chiahemen

There were indications at the weekend that governors of the North-Central geo-political zone have penciled down Mrs. Sarah Jibril, for the position Vice-President in the event  Goodluck Jonathan becomes acting President.

Jibril, from Patigi local government area of Kwara state, has remained on the nation's political scene in the last three decades, during which she aspired for the Presidency on different party platforms, including that of the defunct Social Democratic Party (SDP).
The move by the North-Central governors, according to sources, was part of the strategy to play a prominent role in a post-Yar’adua Presidency.

It was however learnt that two of the governors from the zone were yet to buy the idea, with one citing the religious background of the frontline female politician as reason for his opposition to her candidacy. The second anti-Jibril governor, sources said, is believed to be interested in the slot himself.

Some of the governors were said to have held discussions shortly after the meeting of the Governors' Forum in Abuja last week, where the choice of Mrs. Jibril came up. Our sources could not confirm which governor nominated the female politician and how the governors plan to sell her nomination to other Northern governors.

Our source however admitted that the question of how to convince, not just the other northern governors but other members of the Governors Forum to buy what would be a Christian-Christian ticket, posed a serious dilemma for the group.

"This issue may not be as problematic as that of convincing the other two North-Central governors to change their position,” said our source.

On the question of whether Mrs. Jibril, a rather radical politician with socialist orientation was a member of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the source maintained that the choice of the female politician was predicated on the belief that she would not pose any serious problem in the calculations for the 2011 elections given her antecedence as “a less ambitious politician among the lot from this zone.”

Mrs. Jibril could however not be reached comments as at the time of writing this report.
