Joe Fortemose Chinakwe, a 30 year old trader has been arrested by the police in Ogun state for naming his dog, Buhari.
The police said Chnakwe’s action offended some Northerners in his vicinity, who reported the matter to the command.
When the trader’s family went to secure his bail, the police informed them that his case had been transferred from the Sango police station to the Ogun State Police Command headquarters at Eleweran.
A family member who spoke to Vanguard alleged that Chinakwe has been denied bail, adding that “Chinakwe is a lover of dogs and he names them after things that tickle him. He bought this dog a year ago and named it Buhari. Unfortunately, some Northerners, who dominate the vicinity where he resides misconstrued his intention and connived to take him up. The complainant then claimed it was derogatory because his father answers Buhari.”
Speaking on the matter, a police source said “He (Chinakwe) not only named the dog Buhari but boldly wrote it on the body of both sides of the dog and was seen parading the neighbourhood dominated by Northerners with it.”
Confirming the arrest, the Ogun state police spokesman, Abimbola Oyeyemi, also said “ I have made enquiries. The man bought a dog and inscribed Buhari on both sides of its body. One Mallam lodged a complaint and when our men got there, we found out that it was true. You know such thing can cause serious breach of the peace and ethnic or religious unrest. We are charging him to court for conduct likely to cause a breach of peace.
“He was arrested last Saturday and we are taking him to court later today (Tuesday) or tomorrow morning (today). You know an average Northerner will feel bad over such a thing. It can cause serious ethnic crisis or religious confrontation because when you are relegating such a name to a certain person, you are indirectly insulting him.”
Reports say Chinakwe asked his friends to kill the dog so it will not be used as an evidence against him.

He can named his pet any name but went too far to inscribe the name on the dog. How can he ask his friend to kill the innocent dog just because of its evidence. He must have think of the consequences before making the moves he make. He will learn the lessons of his wrong doings.

I stand to be corrected, but where in our Constitution does it say it's a crime to name a dog? Please where are all our lawyers? This case must not just go away like that. For me, I feel the police are infringing on the poor man's rights.

He is wrong anyway. A dog is not even suppose to bear a person's name talk more of inscribing the name on it's body. Sorry man, you have to learn your lessons.
