Chief Alex Akinnadeju is an old horse in politics. His experience in politics spans over 42 years. A two-time Chairman of Idanre Local Government Area of Ondo State. He was elected into the state House of Assembly in 1999. Alex, as he is fondly called by his admirers, told Daily Sun that because of the attitude of the opposition parties, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), will rule the nation for the next 200 years.
Excerpts:

PDP and one-party state
“Are the opposition parties preparing for a take-over? You will only see them when election is six weeks ahead. Those that are making the change in other countries, from the day they lose an election, they start another strategy. You will see them everywhere. Is there any sign of opposition party taking over at all?

“If they are doing politics the way we are doing it, how do you think Obama or McCain would emerge in United States? We don’t have politicians here, but politicians of the belly, who want to collect money from INEC to run party.

“They are ordinary collectors, there is no opposition. The parties they register are only sitting by name, nobody can tell me that they are of grassroots. They are only appearing on the pages of the newspapers, CNPP, Conference of Nigerian Political Parties. “Before you can think of any party taking over, the action must commence by now, not when election is just two days time. Are they prepared to take over at all? So that man that asks that question is only worrying himself. With what I am seeing on the ground, I would say PDP would rule for 200 years, because the opposition is not doing anything.”

Electoral reform
I have sent them my memo, politics is my 24 hours business. What I suggested to them is that in the next dispensation, they must cancel in its entirety the present system of hand picking candidates for both the local government and the House of Assembly. Tell me what is that change. “In the olden days, when our fathers were called councillors in their local governments, what did they do? They served! My father served without embezzling money. Somebody with a failed School Certificate would be brought to collect N150,000 or N250,000 monthly. He is just there to share council money.

What do you expect of him? There are lots of sharing in the local governments.
“The electoral system must recommend primaries. That once there is no genuine system, such election is null and void. The present system of electing councillors and their chairmen was not through primaries. They know who is going to be councillor next year. It applies to all the political parties. They just say this man will go for councillor and that one chairman, by organizing a kangaroo primary election. You can never emerge unless you belong to the system of collecting and sharing. Politics must always add the word democratic, once something is not democratic, it is evil.”

How do you compare one year of Agagu and Mimikos?
“When Dr. Olusegun Agagu was in office, he spent a lot of time on the road map to progress. Before the end of his two years, he began to roll out projects. So, there is not too much difference at all between the two governments. You cannot say Agagu was too slow and Mimiko is too fast. They are all calculating. Let us wait for two years before we start judging.

“I want Mimiko to focus upon on the rural roads and the rural areas. He should also go all out to make sure that his impact is felt in all the 18 local councils. He must link the roads in these communities together. If people have access to good roads and water, life will be more meaningful to them. Majority of Ondo State people are in rural areas.”
