Fire yesterday gutted the office of the Osun State Governor, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola. The inferno started in the afternoon when an apartment in Aregbeola’s office at Abere got burnt. Some valuable documents, which at press time were yet to be identified, were also burnt.
The cause of the inferno was attributed to a surge in power supply which made one of the air conditioners in the office to catch fire. Firefighters battled for several hours to put out the inferno. A witness said it took the divine intervention for workers in the office not to get trapped in the inferno. At the scene of the incident, people gathered in groups to discuss the issue.
When journalists got to the office about 6.44p.m., there were many security men of ground, who blocked entrance into the office. “Why must you enter? There is no chance for you to enter here today,” one of the security agents said. The state Commissioner for Information, Mr. Adelani Baderinwa, said the fire was as a result of power surge in one of the air conditioners inside the Governor’s Office. He said:
“It is heartening to note that not a single document, or equipment was destroyed and nobody was hurt.
“We reiterate that every document in the Governor’s Office is intact. “The fire mainly affected the office of the Governor alone; no other office is af-ected. It is not a serious fire outbreak. It is regrettable that the electricity suppliers have been persistently unable to regulate the supply of power to meet the necessary standard. “Many Nigerians have lost their properties to power surges and other electrical malfunctioning.”
