
Traditional rulers in Owaza, Ukwa West Local Government Area of Abia State have stated that they can no longer guarantee the safety of SPDC , Total E&P Nigerian Limited; two oil giants operating in the area over their inabilities to be alive to their corporate social responsibility.
The trio of his royal majesties Eze Obioma Levi(JP), Eze Young Ogbonna and Eze Christian Ukaegbu, who stated this on Friday while speaking to newsmen in their palaces on the neglect and destruction of their farmlands, aquatic activities among others caused by oil explorations carried out by Shell and Total oil companies, demanded a Memorandum of Understanding between the companies and the host community, adding that they can no longer appeal to their youth not to take up arms or destroy oil installations in the area
The traditional rulers, frowned that since the discovery of oil in 1958 in Owaza, the community has been backward in terms of development as there are absence of good roads, drinking water, scholarships for their wards, employment, absence of light, among other benefits due them as a community that boasts of 63 functional oil wells, appealing to President Muhammadu Buhari and Governor Okezie Ikpeazu of Abia State to come to the rescue of Owaza community to curb the wanton destruction of means of livelihood by Shell and total without compensation.
Earlier while briefing newsmen on the agreement the community entered with SPDC which is the foremost oil company in the area before the arrival of Total E&P in 2013, Pastor Whyte Ikocha, Secretary General, Owaza Development Town Union, said it is regrettable that the two companies have been operating without MoU. He said in 2017, they were told by Total to come to Port Harcourt, the Rivers state capital for the signing of MoU, pointing out that a copy was never made available to them, just as there was no Environmental Impact Assessment Report, which would have served as a working document.
Pastor Ikocha, said the community is fed up with the activities of the oil companies in the area, adding that there are no employments for their teeming youth,
