Nigeria@50: FG to honour Awolowo, Azikiwe, Soyinka, others

President Goodluck Jonathan on Tuesday approved the conferment of special Golden Jubilee Independence Anniversary Awards on 50 distinguished Nigerians and friends of Nigeria for their various roles and contributions to the development of the country.

Chief Obafemi Awolowo

The awardees, according to a statement by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Alhaji Yayale Ahmed, include some dead Nigerians heroes. Among them are the late Chief Obafemi Awolowo, Herbert Macaulay, Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe, Sir Ahmadu Bello and Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa, who are to be honoured posthumously for their immense contributions to the development of the country.

Also on the list are former Presidents Shehu Shagari and Olusegun Obasanjo; ex-head of state, General Abdulsalami Abubakar; Nobel Laureate, Prof. Wole Soyinka; and Prof. Chinua Achebe.

The statement added that the awards would be conferred on them or representatives of their families in the case of those who are deceased by the President at the Banquet Hall, State House, Abuja on Thursday at 7pm.


Other awardees are the late Chief Samuel Ladoke Akintola, late Mallam Aminu Kano, Chief Anthony Enahoro, late Ernest Ikoli, Jaja Anucha Wachuku, Dennis Chukude Osadebay, Maj.-Gen. J.T.U. Aguiyi-Ironsi and General Yabuku Gowon.

Also to be honoured are Prof. Kenneth O. Dike, Prof. Jacob Ade Ajayi, Prof. Ishaya Audu, Prof. Iya Abubakar, Chief Emeka Anyaoku, Alhaji Yusuf Maitama Sule, Joseph Tarka, Shettima Ali Monguno, among others
