It was another Tuesday, and 31-year-old Nasir Gidado Omar set out to work in the early hours of the morning as usual. He had no reason to suspect anything, and therefore had no premonition of what fate had ahead of that July 13, 2010. Not with the cool morning breeze and the bright atmosphere that smiled at his face as he stepped out of his house in the Maitama District of the Federal Capital, Abuja.

Although the father of two was not living with his family, he had sent text messages to them that morning, professing his evergreen love for them. Satisfied that another fruitful day was in the offing, he flagged down a cab draped in the authorized Abuja green colour to take him to his place of work at the National Judicial Institute (NJI), Airport Road.

Few minutes after taking off, Omar asked the driver to pull over and pick a young man that was stranded, who was going the same direction. The driver obeyed and they continued with their journey.
Unknown to them, the devil was already in position, ready to strike. And it was at the Wuse Market area that his mission was accomplished. Standing in front of them were some gun-totting mobile policemen, ostensibly on duty at the Wuse Market area.

According to eyewitness reports, one of the mobile policemen fired sporadically at the taxi after commanding the driver to stop. After the gunfire died down, Omar was lying stone dead on the passenger’s seat. As soon as the act was done, the trigger-happy police officer said to be a corporal and his colleagues all took to their heels. Meanwhile, the other passenger in the car, who was picked on the way was hit on the left arm by a bullet that pierced through the head of the late Omar.

They were rushed to the Zankli Medical Centre for treatment where the driver abandoned the passenger and drove away with Omar’s body in the car. A graduate of Islamic Studies from the University of Maiduguri, Omar had only assumed duties at the institute on July 1, 2010, as a research fellow. He left behind a wife and two children, whom he was making arrangements to relocate to Abuja before his death.
Information Officer to the NJI, Madu Emezie and the Divisional Police Officer [DPO] in charge of Zone 3 Divisional Police station, Mr. Zubairu Sabo, both confirmed the killing.

A joint statement by both men quoted the passenger who was sitting beside the deceased thus:
“I was sitting at the back of the same taxi with Gidado, who was beside the taxi driver. When we approached Wuse junction, a mobile policeman ordered the driver to pull over and without hesitating for a moment, shot the deceased at a close range. As I was dodging, the bullet that pierced through him hit my left arm.

“As the policeman scampered to safety the driver assisted me to the Zankli Medical Centre to receive treatment. He waited in his car while I went in for treatment. Unfortunately, when I came out from the hospital I discovered that the taxi man had made away with the body of Nasir.”

On hearing the shocking news, the statement said, NJI’s Director of Finance and Administration, Mr. Ibrahim Tama Gambo, rushed to the Divisional Police Headquarters, on the instructions of the administrator of the institute, Justice Umaru Eri, to see the D.P.O. Mr. Zubairu Sabo on the incident.
It was at the police station that the DPO told the director that the body of Gidado had been found.
According to the D.P.O: “Mobile policemen on patrol of Jabi axis discovered the body abandoned at an open place near Jabi Market in a pool of his blood. The body was later conveyed to the National Hospital for an autopsy at the Mortuary and Anapathology unit.

While at the hospital, the authorities requested for a coroner form - that is a report of preliminary investigation on details surrounding his death before they could attend to the body. A public official responsible for investigating deaths that appear not to have natural causes usually issues a coroner report.

The statement said a medical doctor on duty, Dr Jubrin Paul, was emphatic that under no circumstance would the warrant to bury the dead be issued without the autopsy. He promised to conduct the autopsy within three hours to enable them bury the dead despite the fact that the doctors were on strike.
However, an unnamed friend to the deceased had vehemently refused, saying that there was no need for an autopsy as their religion frowns at it.

Meanwhile, Justice Mamood Mohammed of the Supreme Court, a relative of the late Gidado has promised to see to the end of the matter. Already, he had contacted the Commissioner of Police, FCT Command and the Inspector General of Police on the matter. And there are fears that somebody might want to cover up the case given that the culprit was yet to be arrested and brought to book.
