Pope Benedict stated in the new book, “Light of the World”, that the use of condoms is sometimes justified as it can prevent the spread of AIDS. The Vatican has had a controversial position up until now with regard to the use of condoms to prevent people from getting this disease.
Pope Benedict’s book is scheduled to be published this Tuesday, November 23. Although the book admits that condoms are permissible when used to prevent people from contracting AIDS, the Catholic Church still bans contraception.
Nonetheless, many have expressed that the Vatican’s admittance within the book regarding this form of protection during intercourse is useful when serious disease such as AIDS is in question was a true breakthrough.
The US group called Catholics for Choice said through its leader, Jon O’Brien, that “it is a marvelous victory for common sense and reason, a major step forward toward recognizing that condom use can play a vital role in reducing the future impact of the HIV pandemic.”
Pope Benedict’s book entitled “Light of the World” will comprise of 219 pages. In this book, Pope Benedict also speaks openly about a possible resignation due to his health issues.
With regard to the use of condoms, Pope Benedict said that, when prostitutes are involved, their use is “a first step towards moralization”, even though this form of protection isn’t “really the way to deal with the evil of HIV infection.”
