Nemesis has caught up with Mr. Nduka Adam, an indigene of Kwale in Delta State, who specialised in assisting drug trafficking syndicates to move their illicit products, including Indian hemp, to various locations for sale.

Adam, 30, who is being held in Minna by the Niger State command of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, told PUNCH METRO that he had for some times been conveying bags of Indian hemp to any destination in the country specified by his clients.

He said one of his trips, which involved transporting the product from Akure in Ondo State to an unspecified area in Lagos State, fetched him N15, 000.

“My Lagos trip was successful. Nobody stopped and searched my vehicle on the road. Those who owned the drugs adopted a strategy to ensure that all the security operatives and even members of the public did not suspect what I was carrying. At the end of the trip, I was paid N15, 000,” he said.

PUNCH METRO learnt that Adam in connivance with the drug syndicates concealed bags of Indian hemp in large water tanks before transporting them to their destinations.

Usually, members of the drug cartel along with their driver use a tank of about 5,000 litres to stash over 50 bags of Indian hemp, roll the tank into a mini truck and place a wheelbarrow on top of it before embarking on the journey.

The evil ingenuity, PUNCH METRO, learnt was to deceive security operatives and members of the public that the driver and those accompanying him were construction workers.

But a similar attempt to move bags of Indian hemp from Ogbese in Akure, Ondo State, to an unspecified area in Sokoto was frustrated by NDLEA.

Narrating how he was caught, Adam, who claimed ignorance of the contents of the tank said, “One of my friends called Lukman contacted me and asked me to help them take a consignment to Sokoto. He offered to pay me N15,000 and I accepted. A truck was loaded with a water tank and I was asked to drive it to Sokoto.

“I took off from Ogbese in Akure. But when I got to Jebba, a team of anti-drug agents flagged me down. Almost immediately, the owners of the consignment jumped out of the vehicle and fled into the bush. The security agents searched the tank and discovered it was filled with Indian hemp. I was arrested and taken to NDLEA‘s office in Mokwa and later to its headquarters in Minna.

“I was aware of what were in the bags during my Lagos trip but I did not know about this trip. It was the same vehicle that we used for both consignments. The same people are behind the operation.”

However, the Niger state Commander, NDLEA, Alhaji Abdullahi Abdul, said the command was able to decipher the method of the group’s operation through a tip-off.

He said the command had begun investigation to unmask identities of ringleaders of the operation, promising that those involved in the act would be arrested and prosecuted.
