The Nigerian Railway Corporation is set to commence a daily operation of 11 trains in Lagos to boost its mass transit services in the city.

The introduction of the new trains followed the delivery of 25 new air-conditioned locomotive engines to the corporation.

The Railway District Manager for Lagos, Mr. John Dottie, disclosed this on Friday at a press conference in Lagos, adding that the 11 trains would commence movement in the second week of December.

He said that the passenger trains would be increased to 11 daily, using the recently rehabilitated mainline.

Before suspending its mass transit trains some months ago due to dilapidated track and grounded locomotive engines, the NRC Lagos district used to operate six trains daily.

Dottie said that with the coming of the new trains, passengers should expect timely train movement, stressing that the first would be as early as 5.30am.

According to him, the first and second trains will leave Ijoko and Agbado simultaneously by 5.30am and arrive Iddo by 6.45am/7.34am.

”Another train leaves Ijoko by 6.20am and it will arrive Iddo at 7.56am, while two more trains leave Ijoko 10.20am and 2.20pm to arrive at 11.56am and 3.56pm, respectively,” the RDM said.

The corporation, he added, would also operate some train services from Ijoko to Apapa immediately the rehabilitation of that line was completed.

Dotie said that 25 new locomotive engines delivered by General Electric had been deployed to various sections of its operation

Although he did not disclose how many of them were released to the Lagos district, the RDM said this had increased the number of passengers carried per day from 1,000 to 13,000 people in the district.
