Heavy snowfall in some parts of Europe, especially the United Kingdom, on Wednesday and Thursday, affected Nigerian passengers, as flights coming into Lagos and Abuja airports suffered delays for some hours.

The adverse weather condition had caused delays and cancellations of flights across Europe.

London Gatwick, Edinburgh and a few other airports in Europe will remain closed until Friday morning, according to a BBC report.

Paris and Geneva airports were closed until Thursday morning. Europe’s busiest airport, Heathrow, also warned of disruption.

Consequently, long-haul flights out of London Heathrow airport, including those coming to Nigeria, were delayed for some hours.

On Thursday, a British Airways flight from London to Lagos, scheduled to arrive at 17:55 local time, was shifted to 19:47, according to a new schedule posted on the airline’s website.

Earlier on Thursday, the London-Abuja flight of the British flag carrier, which was scheduled to arrive 05:35 local time, delayed its arrival till 07:11.

BA, in a statement from its office in Nigeria, attributed the delays to the heavy snowfall.

According to the statement, “We are also experiencing freezing conditions at Heathrow and we are having to clear many aircraft of ice before their departure.

“This is leading to some delays and cancellations and we are re-planning our schedule to ensure as many customers as possible can fly to their destinations.”

BA advised passengers to check its website for the latest information about their specific flights before leaving for airports.

Virgin Atlantic’s flights were also affected. Its flight number VS 651, London-Lagos, scheduled to arrive 05:55 local time, did not arrive until 07:33, according to a fresh schedule posted on the carrier’s website on Thursday.

However, Virgin Atlantic officials in Nigeria claimed that “all its flights operated according to schedule”

The heavy snowfall had caused delay in departure of BA and Virgin Atlantic flights out of London, according to the new schedules on their websites.

BA, in the statement, said that the UK and parts of Europe had continued to be affected by snow and adverse weather conditions.

It said that the bad weather was expected to continue.
