Presidential aspirant and former governor of Lagos State, Bola Tinubu, has assured delegates of the All Progressives Congress (APC) that he is “a serious man with a serious purpose.”
Mr Tinubu also said he is the best person to fly the party’s flag at the 2023 presidential poll.
He said this in his address at the party’s special national convention organised to produce the party’s presidential candidate.
The convention, which is underway, is being held at Eagle Square, Abuja. It will see party delegates elect a presidential candidate from 23 aspirants that have indicated interest.
Mr Tinubu was the first to address the delegates before the voting exercise.
In his speech, he said at the end, the elected candidate must deliver victory at the 2023 election at both state and national levels and must unite Nigerians from all walks of life. He said he is the person with the capacity to so do.
“The candidate you select must have the experience, leadership and qualities. Other aspirants are good men and women but I sincerely believe I am the person that fits that.”
The former governor boasted about transforming Lagos State from a dangerous and unwelcoming place to a clean and safe place, adding that he is a “serious man with a serious purpose. And will use it to benefit the people.”
He also described himself as a unifying leader who has put together structures that have delivered victory over the years.
“I cannot talk of a brighter future without declaring my intention to fight terrorism and insecurity. I am confident, competent and ready to start from day one,” he added.
In a few hours, the APC will elect a flagbearer.
The convention is holding amid controversies surrounding the selection of a consensus candidate.
While northern governors in the party are calling for a southern candidate, the party chairman, Abdullahi Adamu, had announced Ahmad Lawan, the Senate President, as the party’s consensus candidate.
