Ramon Abbass, a.k.a. Hushpuppi, a well-known cybercriminal, spoke out about his fraudulent career, from which he claimed to have earned approximately $300,000.
The fraudster, who was extradited from Dubai and had been detained in a U.S. prison since June 2020, is awaiting his ultimate sentencing.
Hushpuppi wrote a handwritten letter of apology to the preceding judge, Otis Wright, before his scheduled sentencing on Monday.
In the letter, he thanked the FBI for doing an excellent job of “upholding the law against criminals like myself.”
Mr Abbas apologised for his actions, lauding the Federal Bureau of Investigation for the thorough investigation that saw his arrest in Dubai and prosecution in the U.S.
Abbas mentioned how he made money by selling footwear and clothing out of the trunk of his car in the letter that was obtained by the People’s Gazzette.
Mr Abbas wrote the letter ahead of his sentencing, looking to curry a more lenient judgement.
“I will like to specially apologise to the victims in the cases I’m involved with from count one to five…,” Mr Abbas wrote.
“I apologise to the law enforcement agents who have worked tirelessly to make the world a safer place and to the U.S. Attorney’s entire office for the great work of upholding the law against criminals like myself.”
He further stated that while planning cybercrimes, he only earned up to $300,000, and pleaded for a sentence reduction of up to 65%.
“Your honour, I totally recognise the seriousness of my offence, and no amount of sorry can write my wrong in the hearts of the victims, and this is why I have decided to use my personal money to offset all of the entire $1,700,000 restitution even though I only benefited a fraction of $300,000,” Mr Abbas wrote.
