Three days after communities of Kegbara-Dere and neighbouring Baranyowa-Dere in Gokana Local Government Area of Rivers State clashed, the death toll has risen to 18 with six more people injured and 20 houses razed . The State Police Command said 10 people arrested in connection with the fracas ignited as a result of argument over an English premiership football match., had been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID). The crisis assumed a new dimension yesterday when youths from Baranyowa community launched a fresh dynamite attack on their neighbours at about 6am and moved into Kegbara-Dere community.
In the wake of the offensive, two persons were killed in Kegbara-Dere and buildings and valuable property were destroyed, just as one person was reported to have gone missing. As at the time of filing this report, many residents had fled to nearby Mogho, Kpor and Bodo communities to seek refuge. State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Dr. Rita Inoma-Abbey, who confirmed the latest deaths in a text message yesterday gave the names of those killed as Dumbari George and Barida Ngia, while Dumbor Nanwin Muubana is missing. Inoma-Abbey, a Superintendent of Police (SP) said the Police have visited the Terabor General Hospital to confirm the casualty figure, while the six person wounded are receiving medical attention.
According to the police image maker, “latest information from Hon. John Kpalap of K-Dere, revealed that two persons died in the attack by B-Dere youths on Wednesday, while six persons were wounded and admitted in Dumkil Clinic in Kpor, the local government headquarters. “One Lekpea Taoh has been taken to Teme Clinic in Port Harcourt . The deceased persons are Dumbari George and Barida Ngia, while Dumbor Nanwin Muubana is missing. “ She added that the situation in the area was still tense, although policemen had been drafted to the area to quell the fighting.
