The most common conception is that the eyes should be closed – you’re supposed to lose yourself in a kiss. But the truth is it all depends.

Of course if you are french kissing for long minutes, it’s much better if your eyes are closed. Otherwise you’ll simply look silly. French kissing with open eyes is even called ‘fish-kissing’ from the fact that fish do not have eye lids and never close eyes.
Also, you will get distracted by what you see – half of your partners cheek, an ear, some hair maybe, a poster on the wall, a tv show.

Actually, in many situations it makes perfect sense to have eyes open and remain vigilant during the kiss. For example if you kiss on the street, while walking or in a crowded bar or other place, you would not want to lose sight of your surrounding. It’s a noble thing to die for love but let’s leave that for characters in books and movies – you do not want to walk under a car with your beloved while kissing.
