At a joint press conference in Abuja, on Monday, by the Minister of State for Education, Mr Kenneth Gbagi, and the chairman of INEC, Professor Attahiru Jega, the Federal Government explained that over 70 per cent of the schools would be used for the exercise, which would involve thousands of people going to the premises of the schools and, as such, it would be a security risk to allow the pupils and the students to be around during the period.
According to the minister, “government took the decision in the over-all safety of our children, their teachers, INEC staff and others. We don't want our children to be involved in any form of accident now that people see elections as a do-or-die affair. Elections today have become a serious issue; we only know where we started; we don't know where we are going.
“We don't know what people can do during the exercise. Government has an oversight function to ensure the safety of life and property. This closure is not a daily affair; it is only on rare occasions like this, the public should bear with the government.”
