Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde disclosed that the recent explosion that shook the state capital was a direct result of criminal activities carried out by illegal miners. The incident, which occurred at approximately 7:44 pm on Tuesday, January 16th, claimed the lives of two individuals and left 77 others injured.
Governor Makinde expressed his condolences, stating, “In total, we have 77 injured victims so far, most of whom were treated and discharged, and 2 fatalities. May their souls rest in peace, and may God give their loved ones the fortitude to bear this irreparable loss.”
According to preliminary investigations conducted by security agencies, the explosion originated from explosive devices stored by illegal miners in a residence located in Bodija. Governor Makinde emphasized that ongoing investigations would ensure accountability for those responsible for the tragedy.
“I urge all residents to please call 615 for any emergencies they may be experiencing at this time and to remain calm and stay away from the immediate scene of the incident to allow rescue operations to be carried out without interference,” he added.
The Governor assured the public that the state government would provide adequate support to the victims and those who lost their properties. Immediate response measures included the deployment of earth-moving equipment, ambulances, emergency lights, and security personnel to the incident site.
“Medical personnel are on standby at public and private hospitals within Ibadan to provide all needed assistance to the injured. We have visited UCH to see some of those injured during the incident,” Governor Makinde confirmed.
Expressing gratitude to first responders, security personnel, and medical teams involved in the rescue operations, the Governor urged the public to offer prayers for the affected individuals as rescue efforts continued. The state remains committed to bringing those responsible for the illegal mining activities and subsequent explosion to justice.
