Justice Evelyn Anyadike of the Federal High Court in Ilorin has handed down convictions and sentences to three currency racketeers who were found guilty of selling new naira notes to the public for commercial purposes. The convicts, identified as Asmau Sallah Wuraola, Owoduni Abdullahi Isa (also known as Bolaji), and Shuaibu Rukayat, were sentenced on Monday, March 4, 2024, after pleading guilty to one-count separate charges brought against them by the Ilorin Zonal Command of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
The charge against Wuraola stated: "That you, Asmau Sallah Wuraola, on the 17th day of February, 2024, at Arca Santa Event Center in Ilorin, Kwara State within the jurisdiction of the Federal High Court, did trade in Naira Notes issued by the Central Bank of Nigeria and thereby committed an Offence Contrary to Section 21 (4) of the Central Bank of Nigeria Act, 2007 and punishable under Section 21 (1) of the same Act."
Upon hearing the charges, the defendants pleaded guilty.
Prosecuting counsel, Innocent Mbachie, presented the facts of the cases and tendered new naira notes recovered from the defendants at the point of arrest as evidence. The evidence was admitted by the court. Mbachie then requested the court to convict and sentence the defendants accordingly.
In her judgment, Justice Anyadike pronounced the defendants guilty and sentenced them as follows:

The court ordered the forfeiture of the sum of N1,020,000 (One Million and Twenty Thousand Naira) recovered from the convict to the Federal Government, and the POS machine recovered at the point of arrest to be destroyed by the EFCC.
