The Abia State High Court sitting in Ukwa has sentenced two former members of the Abia Vigilante group, commonly known as Bakassi Boys, to death for alleged kidnap and murder. The convicted individuals, Ugochukwu Amaugo and Udo Ogah, were sentenced to death by hanging by Justice Chibuzo Ahuchaogu, the trial judge.
The conviction stemmed from an incident that occurred on August 30, 2014, where the duo allegedly conspired to kidnap and murder two young men, Temple Nwakanma and Martins Azih, in the Osisioma area of Aba. Amaugo and Ogah claimed to have found the victims in possession of firearms, cartridges, and knives and purportedly handed them over to Army personnel at a military checkpoint on the Umuahia-Aba Expressway.
However, the whereabouts of the victims remained unknown as the Nigerian Army denied any involvement in the incident. Family members of the victims subsequently sought justice through the court.
In delivering the judgment, Justice Ahuchaogu ruled that the convicts failed to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that they had handed over the victims to the military personnel, and thus bore responsibility for their disappearance. As a result, they were sentenced to death by hanging for conspiracy, kidnap, and murder.
